Covering The Nakedness of Our Fathers

By Margaret Morenike Doherty-Aka

Genesis 9:22-27 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness. And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. And he said, Blessed be the Lord God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

There was an account in the Bible of when Noah got drunk and passed out naked. His son, Ham saw the nakedness of his father and told it to his brothers. This led to a curse upon Ham’s son (Canaan). The other sons who covered their father’s nakedness received blessings.

Friends, no matter how anointed or how many exploits we may have done for God, this could happen to anyone! Some “get drunk” on their accomplishments, accolades, and so on and “pass out” naked in their tents!!! In their drunken stupor, it may be hard for them to hear clearly from God.

God reveals deep and secret things to His chosen. Many have seen the nakedness (weaknesses, insecurities, inadequacies, shortcomings) of their fathers that others are not privy to. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 30:17 The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.

WHAT SHOULD WE DO?

Genesis 9:23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.

We must cover our fathers’ nakedness (weaknesses, insecurities, inadequacies, shortcomings). Aaron and Hur held up Moses’ hands when he got tired. As long as Moses’ hand was lifted, they prevailed and were victorious.

Let’s make a habit of lifting up one another and praying for one another. The Bible tells us that the heart of a king is in God’s hands and he can turn it wherever he pleases.

Like Shem and Japheth, we must continue to prayerfully cover our fathers’ nakedness and pray that God would wake them up from their slumber or stupor. As we do so, God will bless and enlarge us.

Genesis 9:24-27 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.
